today’s offering is Charles Mingus Sextet with Eric Dolphy - Cornell 1964. there is so much life and heartbreak and vibrancy and comedy in this recording at times i hyperventilate. and mingus’ arrangements always drive me to grab pencil and staff paper and take notes. whenever i listen to this rekawd i go back to thursday nights. on a whim i decided to cruise by the world stage tonight and there was a small sign in the window that said

      I fell in love with Corrine Bailey Rae last year with about half the planet. This cut is a smooth interpretation of one of her cuts. Stop Me….YES a cover of The Smiths 80’s relic redone quite nicely by DJ Mark Ronson and Daniel Merriwether who take the song to Motown. Staying in the Big M, we hear a new take on Marvin’s Grapevine. I’ve always appreciated Roy Ayers ever since “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”, Holiday is a new cut from Roy. What Hope Have I is a House classic redone by Sabrina Johnson. The Brand New Heavies cover Stevie Wonder ol’ skool style on I Don’t Know Why I Love You. House diva Kym Mazelle offers Stand Up and if you listen closely, you’ll hear a sample of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes “Bad Luck”. Next is Ibiza Music United doing a cover of the Robin S classic Show Me Love. Then we have a new twist on the Crystal Waters staple Gypsy Woman. Then I decided to dig out ol’ girl Donna Summer and dust her off and make her Work Hard For The Money once again.
      Ever see The Color Purple? Then you will remember Shug’s travel from the juke joint to the church on Maybe God Is Trying To Tell You Something. We end with an update of the Three Degree’s classic The Runner featuring Sheila Ferguson who is the original lead singer of the Three Degrees. Hope you enjoy until the next time you hear form me.
